The AJ Scahill Stakes was first run in 1978 when it was won by a horse named Burgess Queen. The race was initially a Principal race before being granted Group 3 status in 1980. The AJ Scahill Stakes was run over 1,200 metres for two years in 1978 and 1979 and over 1,450 metres for one year in 1983. The race was held at Belmont Park Racecourse in 2003.

The AJ Scahill Stakes is held on Kingston Town Classic Day and shares a race program with the Group 3 Sir Ernest Lee Steere Classic (1400m).

Horses that run in the AJ Scahill Stakes have often come via races such as the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes or the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes earlier in the summer carnival. Those runners that perform well in the AJ Scahill Stakes usually go on to be successful throughout the summer months in Perth.

AJ Scahill Stakes Betting

Betting is available on the AJ Scahill Stakes, with wagers such as win and place bets being the most popular. Exotic bets such as trifectas, quinellas, first fours and exactas are also able to be placed on the AJ Scahill Stakes.

Because it’s held during December when there simply isn’t a whole lot of racing going on, AJ Scahill Stakes betting tends to happen on a bigger scale than most Group 3 events which are often overshadowed by major feature races. It’s a good race for a punt too, with the favourite often getting up in the event.

Don’t forget that betting is also available on the Melbourne Cup 2015, which takes place on the first day of November each year. The Melbourne Cup is worth over $6 million in prize money.
